This coffee is sourced from family-owned farms organized around Promotora de Desarrollo Cooperativo de Las Segovias (PRODECOOP), a cooperative in the Estelí, Madriz and Nueva Segovia regions of Nicaragua. Bringing together 38 grassroots cooperatives composed of 2,300 small farmers, 30% of whom are women, the coop promotes gender equality. They also strive to improve the quality of life for coffee producers and their families through projects promoting income diversification and education.
PRODECOOP operates a centrally located dry mill and cupping lab where coffee is received, processed and selected for export. They help market the farmers coffee internationally and provide them with financing, training, and technical assistance to continually improve coffee quality. An economical and environmentally sustainable cooperative, 100% of the farms have been Fair Trade certified since 1992 and 50% of their current coffee export is certified organic.
